THERE ARE MANY COMMERCIAL FIELDS THAT COULD GREATLY BENEFIT FROM ENERGY-EFFICIENT MATERIALS AND DEVICE RESEARCH THAT WILL ENABLE LONGER BATTERY LIFE. THE GOAL IS TO ELIMINATE THE NEED TO REPLACE BATTERIES IN SENSOR NETWORKS AND COMMUNICATION DEVICES SUCH AS CELL PHONES. WITH THE ADVENT OF SMART SENSING TECHNOLOGIES AND THE SUBSEQUENT PROLIFERATION OF WIRELESS SENSOR NODES, POWER CONSUMPTION AND BATTERY MANAGEMENT OF SUCH DISTRIBUTED NETWORKS BECOMES INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT. WITH APPLICATIONS SPANNING SMART CITIES AND AGRICULTURAL MONITORING, REPLACING BATTERIES FOR INCREASING SENSOR ARRAYS IS BECOMING COSTLY AND TIME CONSUMING. ASLEEP-YET-AWARE SENSORS PROVIDE A MEANS FOR REDUCING POWER CONSUMPTION AND SIGNIFICANTLY EXTENDING SENSOR NODE LIFETIME. OTHER POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS INCLUDE INTERNET OF THINGS AND HOME AUTOMATION WHERE BATTERY LIFE IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE.
