Abstract
The NSF, in conjunction with the SPRS, has secured the services of the Swedish icebreaker ODEN for a research cruise in the Southern Ocean. The objective of the cruise is to collect a range of data in sectors of the Antarctic seas that are rarely visited and data-sparse. From McMurdo Sound the ship will pass through the Ross Sea polynya and then follow the ice edge east through Amundsen and Bellingshausen Seas. The primary cruise track will go from McMurdo across the Drake Passage towards Punta Arenas, Chile. In addition to this scientific cruise, the ODEN will complete the break in, groom the shipping channel, and provide escort services for U.S. resupply vessels to McMurdo Station during the 2009-2010 field season.
