Abstract
This award will support educational and outreach activities to take place at the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Antarctic Treaty, to take place at the Smithsonian, in Washington DC, 1 December, 2009. The Antarctic Treaty Summit (AT 50) is an international workshop that will involve plenary sessions, panel discussions, workshops and poster session over the 5 days of a planned commemorative event. Topics to be discussed include (1) Origin of the Antarctic Treaty; (2) Development of the Antarctic Treaty System; (3) Antarctica?s Role in Global Science; (4) Scientific Advice in the Antarctic Treaty System; (5) International Cooperation in Antarctica; (6) Interactions Between the Antarctic Treaty System and other International Regimes; and (7) Governing International Spaces: Lessons From Antarctica. Outreach activities include publication of a monograph and videography of interviews with speakers, panelists and participants of the event. These efforts shall acknowledge the full or partial support of NSF.
