Abstract

The PI has requested funding to provide partial support for a symposium honoring the100th Anniversary of Roger Revelle?s Birth. The symposium will honor Dr. Revelle?s continuing legacy, and highlight the influence his work continues to exert upon the scientific community and society at large. Dr. Revelle had a long and distinguished career in oceanography including serving as director of Scripps from 1950-1964, he led the Midpac and Capricorn Expeditions which delineated the submarine Mid-Pacific Mountains and explored the Tonga Trench, he was active in the AGU, Project Mohole and IGY, he was an organizer of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), and in 1957 he became a founding member of the International Council of Scientific Union's (ICSU) Scientific Committee to name just a few of his achievements.
