Abstract

0739847 Zaleha This grant supports acquisition of an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) and a river stage gauging system for regional hydrodynamic research with a focus on the study of gravel point bar migration in the Mad River, Ohio. The PI will engage undergraduate students at Wittenberg University in local field research with implications for understanding the formation of gravel river bed deposits in the sedimentary record, deposits that are important aquifer and hydrocarbon reservoirs worldwide. Understanding sediment transport in rivers is also of importance to the civil engineering community for bridge and dam design. Exposing students to modern methods in hydraulics is excellent training for future job opportunities in the geosciences and engineering. ***
