Abstract

0732326 Milne This planning visit grant is supporting Dr Eleanor Milne from Colorado State University to travel to Brazil to develop collaborative research with Professor Carlos C. Cerri, at CENA, University of Sao Paulo (USP), Brazil. The objective of this trip is to develop a collaborative research program around parameterization of the Century General Ecosystem Model for cropping systems on newly cleared land in the Brazilian Amazon. During the planning visit, an assessment of existing information on cropping practices currently being used on newly cleared land will be made. In addition, field visits to farms in the agricultural expansion zone of the Amazon is planned to determine suitable sites for future investigation. The partnership between Colorado State University and CENA will bring together institutions at the forefront of ecosystem modeling and Amazonian research respectively. During the visit, the partners will finalize a proposal that should lead to better understanding of the biogeochemical cycles in the agricultural expansion zone of the Brazilian Amazon.
