Abstract

National Science Foundation OD/OCI Proposal Number: 0726077 Principal investigator: Dale Smith Institution: University of Oregon Proposal Title: Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC): Collaboration for Education, Outreach and Training Project Summary This proposal continues the activities of NSRC around international technical exchange, engineering assistance, training, equipment and training material conveyance, and other activities promoting network technology adoption, awareness and connectivity around the world. The end goal is to enhance and enable international collaboration via the Internet between US scientists and collaborators in developing countries. The intellectual merit lies in the knowledge advancement in networking areas in places all over the world. NSRC's approach is somewhat novel in taking the long term approach in building and then leveraging trusted relationships. The broader impact of these activities is global in scope and speaks directly to establishing and improving underlying cyberinfrastructure, both physical (network connectivity) and human, that is necessary to allow international scientific endeavors to flourish. Such resources are crucial to engage researchers in developers in developing areas of the world. The proposal emphasizes activities targeting Africa. This award was co-funded by NSF's Office of International Science and Engineering.
