Abstract
This Pan-American Advanced Studies Institutes (PASI) award, jointly supported by the NSF and the Department of Energy (DOE), will take place August 12-21, 2008 in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Organized by Dr. Ignacio E. Grossmann of Carnegie-Mellon University, the institute will involve approximately 12 lecturers, 14 seminar speakers, and 50 students from United States, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Canada, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela. The PASI will cover seven topics: Sustainability, New Energy Systems, Biosystems Engineering, Multiscale Material Design, Complex Engineering Systems, Enterprise-wide Optimization, and Advanced Modeling Tools. Results of this PASI will be disseminated through a Virtual Library on Emerging Trends in Process Systems Engineering that will contain PowerPoint presentations, reading materials, software and exercises, all made available via the internet and through newsletters. The PASI will conclude with a panel discussion to promote and stimulate new ideas, which will be featured in a journal article designed to bring them to the attention of the research community.
