Abstract

The Monterey Accelerated Research System (MARS) is a prototype cabled observatory that will function as the technical, operational and management test bed for a regional cabled observatory (RCO) envisioned to be part of the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). This facility will offer scientists and engineers the opportunity to design, deploy and debug a new generation of experiments that take advantage of the power and two-way communications available from a cabled system. Funding from this proposal will support the MARS as a facility to maintain successful operation of the cabled observatory, facilitate the installation of the experiments and assist with providing the data to the community of science users. Broader Impacts The efficient operation of the MARS facility will have broad impacts not only for those directly using the testbed but also through the more efficient operation of the RCO that MARS will enable. In addition, the MARS PIs plan to use the system as a testbed for the use of time series data for educational purposes.
