Abstract

OISE-0729562 (Stancil; University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc.) U.S.-Japan Workshop: Field Effects in Cold Atomic and Molecular Reactions ABSTRACT This award supports a U.S.-Japan workshop at the University of Tokyo on the study of molecular reactions at micro- and nanokelvin temperatures in the presence of external fields, a new interdisciplinary research area emerging at the intersection of a number of subfields of atomic, molecular and chemical physics. The workshop will focus on the basic properties of ultracold chemical interactions in the presence of external electric and magnetic fields, as investigated from a number of disparate viewpoints. Specific topics will include current experimental and theoretical investigations on the modifications of external fields of potential energy surfaces, binding energies, lifetimes and collision rates. Topics of a more applied nature, such as the purposeful application of laser fields to ultracold atoms or molecules in their internal and external quantum states, will also be covered. The workshop will bring together approximately 40 leading U.S. and Japanese researchers, postdocs and graduate students. Several tutorial sessions will be offered by senior researchers to enhance the educational impact of the program for participating students. The Japanese counterparts are Professor Mineo Kimura, Kyushu University Graduate School of Sciences; Professor Yoshiro Takahashi, Kyoto University Department of Physics; and Professor Hidetoshi Katori, University of Tokyo Engineering Research Institute.
