Abstract
National Science Foundation NSF Software Development for Cyberinfrastructure (SDCI) Program Office of Cyberinfrastructure Proposal Number: 0721617 Principal Investigator: Randal L. Butler Institution: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Proposal Title: SDCI NMI NEW: Observatory Middleware Framework Abstract A team of researchers at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, the Scripps Research Institute (Scripps), and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, see a need for improved management of sensors/instruments, data streams, and data processing. This work is a generalized Observatory Middleware Framework to integrate existing and proposed observatory management technologies, and reduce duplication of functionality across observatories. The envisioned framework supports the federation of data streams from multiple observatories, creates support for a common instrument access and management, and provides fundamental mechanisms to enforce policies. The prototype Observatory Middleware Framework will highlight the ability to readily integrate and configure instruments, and data streams into a customized observatory with an indifference to resource implementations. The solution is based around the enterprise service bus (ESB) architecture.
