Institution: Florida State University Tallahassee, FL 32306-4166 Title: MRI/Acq.: Stereographic Projection System to Support Multiidisciplinary Scientific Visualization Project Proposed: This project, acquiring and managing a high-resolution stereographic projection system to support multidisciplinary research, enables sophisticated and realistic simulations of physical phenomena ranging from hurricane formation and prediction, lightning strikes, convective phenomena, fires, ocean dynamics, and protein folding. The resource consists of four major components: . High resolution stereographic projection system, . High-end computer workstation to power the projection system and provide limited interactive data exploration, . High performance file system to stage before it is displayed by the projection system, and . Four stereo video recording workstations for collaborating departments to create videos, which can later be played back in stereo. By wearing inexpensive polarized glasses, the users will see full color 3D imagery. Providing researchers with a unique environment to visualize and explore complex systems, the facility offers a way to see the unseen. Broader Impacts: Given the multidisciplinary nature of the underlying research, the success of the research projects enabled by this system has numerous practical consequences on the lives of the population of this country. The work involves weather prediction and drug development, among others. Scientific visualization presents outstanding education and training opportunities in many areas and at all levels. The facility helps instructors convey complex ideas and provides students hands-on experience with cutting edge technologies.
