Abstract

TITLE: Collaborative Research: EXP-SA: Quantum magnetometer for detection of explosives with nuclear quadrupole resonance PI name: Karen Sauer Institution: George Mason University Proposal Number: 0730473 This is a proposal for improving nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) detection of explosives. NQR is desirable as it is a penetrating method of detection. The enhanced sensitivity through this investigation could provide an order of magnitude enhancement in a compact system. Active spin feedback and quantum control are the most promising innovations in the proposal. Other techniques to be evaluated are aimed at reducing or shielding background interference. A practical implementation is addressed with the conceptual design of a device which mounts under a floor. The work could improve many areas where magnetic resonance is employed such as health care, physics and space science.
