MRI: Acquisition of Instrumentation for Creation of a Regional Undergraduate Biophysical Chemistry Research Cluster

$309,737FY2007BIONSF

University Of Richmond, Richmond VA

Investigators

Abstract

An award has been made to the University of Richmond under the direction of Dr. Lisa N. Gentile to acquire instruments for a biophysical laboratory for research and teaching. The institution will acquire several specialized calorimeters and fluorometers to be used in research on bacterial proteins, molecular mechanisms of neurosteroid in the central nervous system, and the dynamics of protein subunits. The new instruments will improve the research group's ability to measure thermodynamics and observe processes in cells in real time. The instrument will be used in a number of courses, including a special laboratory course for biochemistry majors and workshops for high school teachers and students. The instruments will be a regional resource for other small colleges in the vicinity.
