Abstract

Central pattern generators are small neuronal circuits that produce regular patterns of activity that regulate everything from digestion in lobster to consciousness in human beings. The neural mechanisms used by central pattern generators are remarkably similar across phyla and lend themselves well to analysis from the genetic to behavior. Many examples of a systems biology approach in neuroscience have central pattern generators at their core. This is a field that has made important advances in recent years and whose momentum continues to build. This satellite meeting is associated with the 2007 Society for Neuroscience to be held in San Diego, CA and will provide important support to investigators in this field. The meeting places a strong emphasis on providing a forum for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and new investigators to present their work and to meet more established scientists.
