Abstract

This grant supports acquisition of a centralized computational facility to support the broad range of faculty and student research within the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Oregon. The PIs will acquire a multi CPU Macintosh OS X based, compute cluster and file server (Apple Mac X-Serve), networking equipment and disk storage and tape backup system. The computational upgrade will support a wide range of research efforts by faculty and students within the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Oregon. Numerical modeling of volcanic magma chamber dynamics (Cashman), mid-ocean ridge magmatic and hydrothermal processes (Toomey and Hooft), continental lithospheric dynamics and structure (Humphreys and Schmidt), ice physics and mechanical properties (Rempel), and hillslope processes and landslide hazards (Roering) will all benefit from the proposed computational upgrade. The computational upgrade is likely to promote interdisciplinary collaborations between faculty and their students and it will foster enhanced student access to and experience with, modern computing in the geosciences.
