Abstract

EEC-0647755 Denis Wirtz The award to Johns Hopkins University will provide undergraduate students with challenging research experiences in the area of nanobiotechnology, at the interface of nanotechnology and biology and medicine. One of the strengths of the proposed program is the interdisciplinary nature of the environment in which these undergraduates will conduct research. REU students will interact and work with researchers from several academic departments- for example, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Biophysics, and Biology and across four divisions of the University, including the Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Arts and Sciences, and Applied Physics Laboratory. The overall objective of this program is to provide REU students with a truly unique educational experience, with the research experience at the core, while at the same time serving as an ideal foundation for future graduate research. The program will actively recruit students from underrepresented groups. The REU program will be housed in the recently created Institute for NanoBioTechnology, which will provide students with unparalleled job and internship opportunities after graduation from the REU program through its active Industrial Affiliates Program.
