Abstract
The PI will attempt to calibrate bamboo corals from 250-2200 m water depth offshore California with the objective of developing a proxy for changes in the intermediate water properties on decadal to centennial time scales. The work will test several hypotheses about controls on coral geochemistry that will lead to proxy development for deciphering environmental changes in intermediate water depth. The development of a new potential proxy for high resolution paleoenvironmental studies, support of a graduate and undergraduate summer intern, and development of museum exhibits are considered important broader impacts.
