Abstract

This program provides an eight-week summer research experience, involving a fertile mix each year of seven undergraduate students, three inservice teachers, two graduate students, and two faculty supervisors. These participants, broken into work teams, tackle challenging and relevant mathematical problems with the goal of achieving substantial progress of widespread interest. The entire spectrum of mathematical research will be experienced, including background reading, experimentation, discovery and proof of new results, technical writing, and technical presentations. Students will be encouraged to create new mathematics, to work collaboratively, to attend professional conferences, to master mathematical typesetting software, and to learn about graduate study in the mathematical sciences. This REU/RET project is jointly supported by the MPS Office of Multidisciplinary Activities (OMA) and the Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS).
