Abstract

This Division of Chemistry award supports a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site at the University of North Texas (UNT) for the summers of 2007-2009. Angela Wilson and Thomas Cundari serve as directors for the program. Eight students will participate in the ten-week summer program. Students will be recruited nationally with a special focus on the ethnically diverse region of Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma. The program will provide a strong exposure to research fundamentals to students who may not otherwise have such opportunities at their home institutions. Research projects will span organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, materials, and biological chemistry with special emphasis on computational chemistry and the interface between theory and experiment. UNT is home to one of the largest and most diverse computational chemistry groups in the country and provides an ideal location for such an emphasis. The REU experience will introduce students to a range of career, research, community service, and leadership opportunities in chemistry, and will include interactions with chemical leaders from major chemical companies and other organizations. An external advisory board will assist and advise this REU program.
