Abstract

Technical. A symposium on synthesis and properties of low-dimensional materials will be held at the Spring MRS meeting, San Francisco, CA on April 9-13, 2007. The symposium will focus on advanced materials synthesis, assembly of nanoscale materials, properties of isolated and assemblies of low-dimensional materials, and theoretical and computational approaches to understanding nanoscale phenomena. These materials systems are envisioned to impact next-generation technologies such as high-performance transistors for nano- and microelectronics, low-cost, high-efficiency photovoltaics, high density magnetic storage media, nanoelectromechanical systems, and miniaturized biosensors. Session topics include: Advanced synthesis of nanoscale materials (e.g. heterostructures, anisotropic shapes, and multifunctional materials); Doping low-dimensional materials; Directed and self assembly and patterning; Nano/bio interfaces and assemblies; Electron transport in individual nanocrystals, nanowires, and nanotubes and in their assemblies/networks; Optical properties of nanoscale materials in complex/functional systems; Quantum mechanical-to-atomistic-to-mesoscale modeling; Interaction potentials; and Multiscale theories that address challenges of length- and time-scale integration. Non-technical. An important impact of this conference will be to increase the attendance of young scientists from underrepresented groups. Along with the opportunity to assess the field and future directions, it is expected that new ties will be established among universities, research institutions, and industry at this meeting. The requested NSF funds will be used to facilitate participation in the meeting by underrepresented groups including young faculty, postdoctoral research associates and graduate students.
