A Study to Evaluate the NSF's Vertical Integration of Research and Education (VIGRE) Program
National Academy Of Sciences, Washington DC
Investigators
Abstract
This award supports a project to evaluate the Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) program in Vertical Integration of Research and Education in the Mathematical Sciences (VIGRE) and to produce a report that includes recommendations to DMS for future management of the program. The evaluation is to be conducted by a committee to be convened by the National Academy of Sciences Board on Mathematical Sciences and their Applications (BMSA).

The proposed study will be the first community-wide assessment of the VIGRE program, which is a major effort to improve the human capital pipeline for the mathematical sciences research enterprise. The National Academies has a premier reputation for objective and high-quality studies of science policy issues. A significant broader impact of the proposed activity is that it will produce insights of value to other disciplines that might adopt VIGRE-like programs themselves.
