Abstract

ABSTRACT OCE-0622662 The ocean is a global, turbulent fluid and thus even the very largest scales of flow and density fields are linked to small-scale mixing and wave processes. The need to resolve processes on such a spectrum of scales poses computational challenges. In this study, scientists from the University of Miami propose to develop, validate and apply a new efficient algorithm that is optimized for the high-aspect flow domains that re seen in the ocean. The algorithm will be able to perform non-hydrostatic simulations of small-scale processes which will improve the accuracy of nuermical simulations. These numerical models are currently used for research within the physical oceanography community but they also play a role in simulating climate. Thus, the study will have a broad impact. In addition, the study will support a PhD student who will be educated in the development of new numerical models.
