Abstract

In this U.S.-Peru dissertation enhancement research project supported by the Americas Program of the Office of International Science and Engineering, Mr. Paul Velazco works under the supervision of Dr. Bruce D. Patterson and in collaboration with Dr. Victor R. Pacheco at Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Peru. The topic of this project is the historical diversification in the neotropics, specifically, the evolution and variation of the bat genus Platyrrhinus. The objective is to examine the phylogeographic patterns of a widespread bat genus using multiple genetic markers. This award supports the dissertation research of Mr. Velazco, a graduate student, furthering the Program aim of investing in researchers at the earliest stages of their careers. The expected results will increase understanding of diversification of other vertebrates in the neotropics.
