Abstract

With this new award, the Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry Program supports the work of Professor Robert E. Gawley, of the Chemistry Department at the University of Arkansas. This research will examine the enantiomerization and resolution dynamics of selected chiral organolithium compounds in the presence and absence of chiral and achiral ligands. Thermodynamic and kinetic data will be obtained in order to build an understanding of the dynamics of these important reactive intermediates. Representative examples of several classes of synthetically relevant chiral organolithiums will be examined in detail. These studies are directed toward developing a set of principles that will provide a foundation for advances in the use of chiral organolithiums in stereoselective synthesis. Since stereoselective synthesis is becoming crucial in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and other biologically important molecules, these studies are expected to contribute to the solution of important problems at the interface of chemistry and biology. The research will involve an international collaboration and promote learning through direct research experiences for undergraduates, graduates and postdoctorals.
