Acquisition of a Scanning Electron Microscope with Analytical Capabilities for Biology and Geoscience
Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole MA
Investigators
Abstract
A grant has been awarded to the Marine Biological Lab under the direction of Dr. William Beers to acquire a scanning electron microscope (SEM) for use in research in biology and geosciences. The instrument replaces an antiquated SEM and will provide enhanced imaging capabilities for studies of biological and geological materials. Investigators will use the instrument to study the cells of marine organisms, deep ocean particulate materials, develop microsensors to study oceanic bacteria, and interdisciplinary studies of microbiology and mineralogy. The instrument will also be accessible to students in a wide variety of courses from undergraduate to post-graduate levels. Minority recruitment programs will be used to expand the user base to underrepresented populations of students.
