Abstract

A grant has been awarded to New Mexico State University under the direction of Dr. Erin Silva for the acquisition of a multi-instrument high performance liquid chromatography device to be used in biological research and education. The instrument will enhance studies of metabolism and chemical structure in a range of investigations in chemistry and biology. A group of researchers will use the instrument in studies of how pigments are produced in chili peppers, and compounds from alfalfa that may be used as fuel sources. The instrumentation can be used by undergraduate students in their own research and will enhance a variety of courses in biology. The student population at NMSU is more than 40% Hispanic, and the instruments will augment the education and research experiences of this population. Agricultural scientists will be able to take advantage of the equipment in studies to enhance cropping systems and other aspects of production.
