Acquisition of a MALDI-TOF/TOF Mass Spectrometer for the University of New Orleans
University Of New Orleans, New Orleans LA
Investigators
Abstract
This award supports the acquisition of a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization tandem time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF/TOF) Mass Spectrometer. This mass spectrometer will provide new instrumental capabilities, such as the possibility to perform true tandem mass spectrometry experiments and fully automated database searching, which are not available on the existing older generation mass spectrometers. The proposed research projects require the capabilities of the requested instrumentation and include proteomics, photocatalytic bactericides, and phenotypic variation in fish. The new mass spectrometer will be used also by students and researchers from Xavier University (a member the Historically Black Colleges and Universities - HBCUs). This award also provides support for the major rebuilding effort underway in New Orleans following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Acquisition of the new mass spectrometer will allow increased classroom use of mass spectrometers.
