Abstract

Abstract Program: NSF 04-588 CISE Computing Research Infrastructure Title: CRI: Computational Biology Facility for Western Massachusetts Proposal: CNS 0551401 PI: Brock, Oliver Institution: University of Massachusetts Amherst Researchers at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst will acquire a computer cluster for research in bioinformatics and computational biology research supporting researchers in Western Massachusetts. Research will focus on five research areas that seek to understand protein function determination based on genetic sequence information. The projects bridge computer science and molecular biology to find computational methods to discover the mappings to functions. The project will make these resources available on campus and encourage use in the Five Colleges of Western Massachusetts building on a regional Computational Biology Special Interest Group established in 2005. The researchers will actively recruit students from underrepresented groups through the Northeast Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate and collaborations with minority serving and womens colleges and universities.
