$100,000FY2006MPSNSF

National Academy Of Sciences, Washington DC

Investigators

Abstract

The National Academy of Sciences will bring together a committee of experts to assess the status of New Materials Synthesis and Crystal Growth (NMCG) in the United States. The assessment will explore the role of NMCG in condensed matter science and technology and will identify areas of opportunity for future research. Recommendations will be made for capitalizing on these opportunities and U.S. capabilities will be benchmarked against foreign competition. Factors to be considered will be the historical roles of industry, university, and government laboratories in NMCG, the role of crystal growth for both scientific and commercial applications, and the professional status of crystal growers in the United States.
