Abstract

National Science Foundation OD/OCI Proposal Number: 0627970 Principal investigator: Kevin M. Morooney Institution: Pennsylvania State University Proposal Title: A Workshop on Effective Approaches to Campus Research Computing Cyberinfrastructure Project Summary This proposal describes a workshop focused on campus computing infrastructure with an audience of major research institutions CIOs and CTOs, co-resident with the annual Internet2 members meeting. The workshop will survey a pre-selected set of deployments that represent the expected range of academic computing environments on todays campuses: Condor pools, campus grids, Beowulf clusters, condos, and high end computing facilities. The issues covered include: technical architectures; data storage; supporting network connectivity; building cooperative efforts; and management issues. The workshop will produce a set of deliverables, including a summary report of the workshop identifying key themes, common motivations and approaches, and outcomes. A web site will be created to disseminate the workshop material including presentations. A report to NSF will be delivered that identifies opportunities for community-wide impacts, such as specific community software. Another report will summarize the inter-institutional issues.
