SBIR Phase I: Wireless Sensor for In Vivo Pressure Measurement

Abstract

This Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase I project aims to determine the feasibility of a new wireless, battery-less pressure sensor for use in the treatment of hydrocephalic patients. Hydrocephalus, if not treated can result in permanent brain damage and even death. Current treatment consists of using surgically implanted mechanical shunts to relieve the pressure. The proposal will address the monitoring of the intra-cranial pressure to detect shunt failures using a wire-less, battery-less, implantable MEMS microsensors. This will aid in the management of the patient and alleviate the need for expensive MRI and CT scans for shunt evaluation.
