Abstract

Funds are requested to support sending several undergraduate students to the 2006 Southern California Academy of Sciences (SCAS) annual meeting, which will be held in conjunction with the Southern California Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) and the California Estuarine Research Society (CERS), at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California on May 12 and 13, 2006. Approximately 400 attendees are expected over the two days, of which 40% will be students from high school to postdoctoral, 25% are college and university faculty, and the rest are evenly split between government agencies, industry, and NGOs, with a handful of the general public. The annual meeting will continue the consistent commitment of SCAS to interconnections between academia and industry, government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and advocacy groups, with regard to scientific approaches to local environmental issues. The meeting also provides a low-key, informal setting for students presenting their original research, often for the first time as a professional. Funds from the National Science Foundation will assist SCAS in meeting our goals by: supporting student participation, reducing registration fees, supporting dissemination of the presented papers beyond meeting itself, providing a higher profile for outreach to potential new members and those from under-represented groups.
