Abstract
This experimental research program will use the collective interaction of a magnetically trapped atomic sample with a resonator mode for spin squeezing to realize a Ramsey type atomic clock operating below the standard quantum limit. In addition, the PI will demonstrate a holographic quantum memory for single quantized excitations, and use it to create photon Fock states with a few photons. Such a light source could be used for optical spectroscopy at the Heisenberg limit. Finally, the group will demonstrate a high fidelity, high-brightness source of narrowband, entangled photons. The broader impact of the program involves training of students as well as applications to clocks and sensors.
