Abstract

0548877 - Buck Abstract This 2-year study will focus on two of the major problems in the current views of continental rift dynamics, i.e., the tectonic force paradox, and the extra subsidence and upper plate paradox. To address these paradoxes they propose to conduct a series of numerical models that are designed to investigate the role that magmatic injection and supply may play in determining the style and extent of development of continental rifting. Important broader impacts include the involvement of a LDEO graduate student and WHOI summer interns. The effort to make the models and code available to the Computational Infrastructure in Geophysics (CIG) is also important.
