Abstract

Daniels This award for an REU Site at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte supports 10 undergraduate engineering students each year for three years in a 8-week summer program. The objectives of the REU Site are: 1) to provide meaningful geotechnical and geoenvironmental research experiences undergraduate participants and (2) to ensure access to the tools necessary for satisfaction and retention in science and engineering careers, with an emphasis on graduate education research. In addition, a full complement of weekly cohort activities creates opportunity for professional, cultural and social development. Finally, peer relationships will be strengthened through an REU "Learning Community." Recruitment efforts will be facilitated by existing agreements between the host-institution and local Historically Black Colleges as well as organizations focused on the recruitment and retention of Afro-Americans, women, Hispanics, American Indians and those with disabilities.
