Abstract
EEC-0552853 Ruane, Michael F. This REU award for a Site in the area of photonics supports 12 undergraduate engineering and science students each year for three years in a 10-week summer research experience at Boston University. The program goals are: (1) to educate science and engineering undergraduates in the emerging technology of photonics, (2) to mentor students in the planning and conduct of independent research in photonics and related application fields, (3) to attract promising undergraduate students from diverse groups and from across the nation into graduate study in photonics, (4) to encourage women and underrepresented minorities to pursue advanced study in this technologically critical area. Additionally, the program will include an ethics component, two seminar presentations and will culminate in a poster session, which will allow students to share their experiences and results. Special emphasis will be placed on recruiting underrepresented undergraduates using an established recruiting structure in Engineering, adding networking in the photonics community, and reaching students through collaborations with faculty in other Centers related to photonics.
