Abstract
0549742 Broitman Dr. Esteban D. Broitman, Carnegie-Mellon University, will be supported for a planning visit to meet with his counterpart, Dr. Raul Conde, Director of the Tribology Group, INTEMA, University of Mar del Plata, in Argentina. They will carry out experiments and coordinate activities in preparation for an Inter-American Materials Collaboration (CIAM) entitled: "Damage Mitigation in Sugar Cane Mill Components". Their work is intended to lead to ways to extend the life expectancy of mechanical steel components used in the sugar cane milling process. Increased knowledge of failure analysis and tribology will also impact other areas of materials research beyond this specific project. Researchers from Brazil and Colombia will also bring their expertise and experience to this project. The GIMI (Grupo de Investigacion en Mejoramiento Industrial) in Colombia was the starting point for this particular project which will be beneficial to all countries involved.
