Abstract
Increasing Competitive Research among Tribal Communities for Documenting Endangered Languages This project is designed to increase the opportunities for tribal communities to successfully compete for funding which supports indigenous language documentation. The PIs propose to develop an intensive four-week course in language documentation (recording techniques, linguistic basics, archiving and access issues) and grant proposal preparation (background research, text formatting, budget) to be offered at the 27th American Indian Language Development Institute (AILDI) at the University of Arizona (Tucson) in June, 2006. This course of study is heavily aimed toward the NSF/NEH Documenting Endangered Languages grants in an effort to place more of these awards at the community level where the language documentation needs are the most critical.
