NUE: Integrating Nanoscale Science Education and Student Research at Jackson State University

$155,000FY2005MPSNSF

Investigators

Abstract

This proposal was received in response to Nanoscale Science and Engineering Education initiative, NSF 05-543, category NUE. Through this award, funded by the Chemistry Division and the Division of Engineering Education & Centers, Prof. Tigran V. Shabazyan and his collaborators at Jackson State University will develop additional modules for existing lecture and laboratory courses in nanoscience/nanotechnology at Jackson State University. One of the new lecture modules will focus on ethical issues (legal, environmental and safety) with nanotechnology. In addition, they will foster interdisciplinary nanoscience research opportunities for a number of undergraduate students. One broader impact of the proposed work comes from the efforts that this NUE team will continue to make to reach out to the local K-12 community -- through student mentoring, Nanotechnology open houses, and equipment and personnel support to K-12 teachers during the academic year.
