Abstract

With this award from the Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program, the Department of Chemistry and Physics at SUNY College at Old Westbury will acquire a liquid chromatograph/mass spectrometer (LC/MS). Research activities include quantitative analysis of bioactive compounds in herbal supplements; design and synthesis of halogenated derivatives and analogs of steroid hormones; and analysis of resonant radiation damage in biological models. Liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (LC/MS) is an extremely powerful technique used for the separation and analysis of complex mixtures. This instrument will substantially strengthen scientific research at this primarily undergraduate institution, and these studies will have a solid impact in the areas of medicinal chemistry and biochemistry.
