Abstract
Abstract CHE-0531030 Crooks/Texas With the support of the Analytical and Surface Chemistry Program, Professor Crooks is developing methods for the synthesis and characterization of size selected bimetallic nano-particles. Using dendrimer templated synthetic approaches developed for monometallic particle synthesis, Crooks and his colleagues are working to prepare alloy and core/shell nanoparticles in the 1-3 nm size range. Analytical methods for characterizing these materials, focusing on X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy, and electron microscopy are being developed as well. Wet chemical methods for characterization based on extraction and selective homogenous catalysis are being studied. Applications of these materials in catalysis are envisioned. Methods for the synthesis of size-selected bimetallic nano-particles are being developed in the laboratories of Professor Richard Crooks at the University of Texas. Characterization tools essential for the study of these novel materials are being implemented. The use of these nano-particles in catalytic applications is being pursued.
