Abstract
Cady 0423902 This three year award funds a new full-time Ph.D. -level technical position who will support scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy research and electron microscopy outreach efforts by faculty and students in the Department of Geology at Portland State University. The technician will support a variety of research projects in the Geomicrobiology and Electron Microscopy Laboratory, the Clay Mineralogoy Laboratory, the Cascade Meteorite Laboratory, the Volcanology/Petrology Laboratory, and the Van Atta Sediment Laboratory, as well as projects carried out by faculty and students in other department on campus and by off-campus users from the greater Portland community. Education and outreach electron microscopy efforts supported by the technician include NSF projects funded by the Center for Learning and Teaching in the West (CLT-West), the Microbial Observatories (MO), and the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) Programs. Duties of the technician will include (a) routine instrument support and maintenance, (b) research support, including sample preparation, microscope operation, data analysis, and consultation, (c) training, including co-teaching SEM and TEM courses, and project outreach, and (d) leading and supporting efforts to acquire new instrumentation. The Geomicrobiology and Electron Microscopy Laboratory instruments include an analytical JEOL 35CX SEM, a JEOL 100CXII TEM and microscopy sample preparation equipment for geological and biological samples. ***
