Abstract

Funds are provided to organize an interdisciplinary workshop that will focus on the relevance of the mass balance of arctic sea ice to arctic climate, biology, and social science. Synthesis of ideas among these groups will be used to develop recommendations for future research goals related to improving our understanding of the arctic sea ice mass budget and supporting the future implementation of interdisciplinary sea ice research, including during the International Polar Year (IPY) 2007/08. The direct aim of the workshop is to provide: (1) recommendations for an integrative sea ice field and modeling program, and (2) recommendations for a large scale, Pan-Arctic integrated sea ice observing system. The meeting will formulate recommendations regarding future project development and implementation, seeking collaboration across disciplines in modeling, field, and observational campaigns. The participation of junior scientists will introduce young scientists to the planning process and wider community, and will encourage the formation of cross-generational links.
