Abstract
Multicenter, parallel-group, blinded, randomized clinical trial comparing the administration of systemic corticosteroids at a dose equivalent to 40 mg of prednisolone per day for 7 days vs no corticosteroid administration among adults hospitalized with severe acute respiratory infection and hypoxemia. Adult (age ⥠18 years) participants hospitalized with severe acute respiratory infection and hypoxemia. Participants will be excluded if they have been hospitalized for >72 hours, have a primary etiology of hypoxemia other than respiratory infection, have a known allergy to corticosteroids, have an established indication for systemic corticosteroids (e.g., acute SARS-CoV-2) or an established contraindication to systemic corticosteroids (e.g., disseminated fungal infection), or if clinicians have determined that systemic corticosteroids are required or contraindicated for the optimal care of the patient.
