Abstract

In FY25, the NIMH Transgenic Core was winding down its operations. Over the course of the fiscal year, the core worked on 30 cryopreservation projects and 35 rederivation projects. Cryopreservation (sperm/embryo) of mouse strains ensures protection against accidental loss or potential genetic contamination. In addition, strains for which there is no current demand or use can be safely and economically stored. Embryo rederivation techniques are used to protect Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) colonies from animals that could potentially harbor unwelcome agents, and to rederive colonies that have become contaminated. In-vitro fertilization (IVF) is an ancillary technique to this project; it is an extremely powerful technique for cryopreservation, rederivation, colony expansion, rescue/recovery and colony management.
