Abstract

During this fiscal year, the Office of Laboratory Animal Science (OLAS) cared for an average census of 4300 cages of mice at the Fishers Lane Animal Center (FLAC). OLAS supported 12 NIAAA Principal Investigators (PIs) conducting animal studies under 17 active Animal Study Proposals (ASPs). Through its commitment to animal welfare; the support and training of scientists in animal care and use and the 3 R's (refinement, reduction and replacement); and comprehensive animal facility management to minimize research variables, the OLAS furthers NIAAA's mission to produce replicable, reproducible, and generalizable basic and translational research in order to understand alcohol's adverse impact on health and well-being across the lifespan.
