Abstract

Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare and highly aggressive subtype of advanced breast cancer. Small, non-coding RNAs, called microRNAs (miRNAs) are potential biomarkers for the diagnosis of IBC as they are frequently dysregulated in a number of other cancers. Fluorescent nitrogen vacancy (NV) diamonds display well known quantum sensing properties and are under intense study for their role in quantum computing and sensing of physical properties such as magnetic and electric fields. We have shown that NV center nanodiamonds can also be used to detect biomarkers of cancer such as microRNAs and have built a widefield fluorescence microscope prototype to detect changes in NV-center nanodiamond fluorescence.
