Abstract

The project is a constituent of the NIH Graduate Partnership Program and serves to coordinate the doctoral research training and the university-NIH interface. The NIH Comparative Biomedical Scientist Training Program (CBSTP), interdisciplinary cross-training of veterinarians consisting of specialty veterinary medicine coupled with training in human disease research leading to a PhD, occurs collaboratively on both Veterinary Medical Education Programs and NIH campuses. Thus, the CBSTP represents an inter-institutional and multidisciplinary educational curriculum that addresses critical needs for early translational research scientists in the biomedical workforce. Program and trainee accomplishments for fiscal year 2025 include: Presently there are 13 veterinarians training as comparative biomedical scientists, supported by multiple NIH collaborating institutes. Two fellows completed their PhD degree since the previous annual report (1 Michigan State University graduate and 1 Purdue University graduate). Supported fellows produced 3 first author research manuscripts, 1 review article; 6 co-authorships; 5 research presentations and received an NIH FARE award during the FY 2025. The CBSTP hosted two 2nd or third year veterinary students for summer research internships. Two veterinarians were recruited in 2024-2025 to begin training in the CBSTP including within the new Graduate partnership consortium..
