Abstract

Fellows may choose to pursue a 2-year program (1 year of clinical rotations, 1 year of research, and half-day/week continuity clinics) leading to board certification in either hematology or oncology alone (single-track training). Each year, 10 to 11 new fellows join the NIH Hematology Oncology Fellowship on July 1 and trains them for a minimum of three years. Fellows who are pursuing an academic career are often allowed to continue training for an additional one or two years. In all, about 30 fellows are in the program at any one time (sponsored by the CCR, NCI). Historically 80% or more of the graduating fellows have their initial appointment in academics, regulatory or industry. This fellowship Program has a long and rich tradition having trained many of the premier cancer academicians in the United States. Former fellows have also held or continue to hold oncology leadership positions in the United States including the presidency of the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the premier clinical oncology organization, the Chief Medical Officer of the American Cancer Society and the Director of the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
